This gave rise to the incorporation of The Johore Golf Club on 27th February 1968. The name of the club was changed to Tasek Utara Golf Club on 22nd November 1971 to reflect its location. The golf course was designed by Dato’ Ahmad Adam, the then Director of the Jabatan Kerja Raya (Public Works Department) Johor. With the help of the JKR and the invaluable assistance from other government agencies, works began on the first nine holes in 1968. The first nine holes were playable by 1970. In 1972, works for the second nine holes began and by 1974 we had the first 18 hole golf course in the State of Johor. The present site of the golf course was originally within a water catchment area and the terrain was undulating and covered with virgin tropical jungle. The natural terrain was maintained without much earth movement. The original jungle trees were retained and this made the course very difficult especially when one misses the fairways. Over the years the majority of these trees died because the undergrowth was cleared and the ecosystem disturbed. A number of pine trees in strategic positions were also destroyed by lightning over the years. Several thousand trees were planted to replace the dead ones. The humble beginning of the clubhouse was a little solid wooden structure built from timber donated by the then Tunku Bendahara Johor, Tunku Abdul Rahman Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail. The old house is still standing next to the driving range and is now the Johor Junior Development Centre. History of the Management The Rules of the Club as published in 1972 states that the Mentri Besar Johor (Chief Minister of the State of Johor) shall be the President of the Club. Twelve other Management Committee Members of the Club shall be elected at the Annual General meeting. The Committee may co-opt another five members into the Management Committee. The State Government built the present dining hall, banquet hall and swimming pool in 1973. The Club was officially opened by the then Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak Bin Dato Hussein on the 3rd July 1975. With the change of the Club’s Constitution in 1975, these premises were handed over to the Club Management. The Constitution change enabled the State Government to take control of the management of Tasek Utara Golf Club with the appointment of all members of the Management Committee save for three who were elected by the members. A further change was made in the Constitution in 1977 when all Committee members were appointed by the State Government. As membership grew there was a need to increase other sporting activities and expand the golf section. With a one for one support from the State Government, the Club embarked on an extension programme with the construction of a new golfers’ lounge, four tennis courts, four squash courts, a three table billiard room, a multi-purpose hall and new changing rooms. The total cost was RM 3 million of which one moiety was paid by members by way of a development fund and the balance by the State Government. In November 1984, His Majesty Sultan Iskandar bestowed Royal Status on the Club and the name was changed to Royal Johor Country Club. In 1991, at the command of His Majesty, a Course Development Committee was set up to upgrade the golf course. A golf course designer, Ms. Max Wexler Consultant Pte. Ltd was appointed for the task. The upgrading involved: – a) renovation of all putting greens and returfing them with Bermuda Tifdwarf b) construction of new tee boxes c) construction of 6 additional lakes d) installation of sprinkler system The renovation was completed in 1993 at a total cost of RM 6 million of which His Majesty donated RM 1 million towards the said cost and the balance was paid from members’ funds and from other donors. Further clubhouse upgrading took place in 1995 at a cost of RM 2.5 million. It involved the relocation of the golfer’s lounge, a new air conditioned reception area, a new administration office and fully air-conditioned changing rooms. Two new half-way houses were built in 2003. A fully lighted 36 bay driving range was erected in 2005 and in the same year the swimming pool was upgraded with modern facilities. On 12th March 2009, the Constitution4 was amended to have five elected committee members with the other twelve committee members appointed by the State Government. At the Annual General Meeting on 23rd July 2010, the members decided to revert the Club to its original name, and as there are other activities besides golf, the name Johor Golf and Country Club was adopted. History of Golf Competitions Being the only 18 hole golf course, Royal Johor Country Club was and still remains to be a popular venue for both amateur and professional tournaments. The Johor Amateur Open was inaugurated in 1973 and the Club played host to this tournament for over 25 years before it moved to other venues. The Royal Johor Invitational Amateur Open Championship, which is listed in the world golf amateur ranking, was initiated in 2002 where all the top amateur golfers from the region and afar came to compete.
